Gem Mythbuster: Diamond Size and Carat Weight Are The Same Thing

It's time for another gem mythbuster!  Today's myth:  Diamond size and carat weight are the same thing.

Is this true?  No.  Here's why.

While the size of a polished diamond is related to its carat weight, it is important not to confuse carat weight with size.  When jewelers refer to a diamond’s carat they are actually referring to the weight of the stone, not the size.

Since diamonds can be cut shallow or deep, two diamonds of the same shape and carat weight may still appear different in size based on the cut proportions.  Just as one man who is 6 feet tall and another who is 5 feet 9 can both weigh 200 pounds, two diamonds that both weigh 1 carat can be different sizes.

Shallower stones can appear larger than deeper stones of the same weight.  A deeply cut diamond has a greater proportion of its total weight "hidden" in the depth, resulting in a smaller size than that of a well cut diamond.  A well cut diamond may even have a slightly lower carat weight than a deeply cut diamond, yet still have a larger diameter, making it appear larger in size.

So, remember that when you hear carat it refers to the weight of a diamond.  The size of a diamond is measured in millimeters and refers to the diameter of the stone.
